History of Local 2822
Local 2822 became a recognized union in July of 1979 when the clerical employees of Hennepin County voted to be represented by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees(AFSCME), known as AFSCME Local 2822 is a member of AFSCME Minnesota Council 5 (formerly Council 14), which represents more than 40,000 workers in Minnesota. The local is also affiliated with the Minneapolis Central Labor Union and the Minnesota AFL-CIO.
Membership meetings are held once a month, on the first Tuesday. Currently the Local is holds its meetings at a number of different locations: alternating between the Libraries at Brookdale, Ridgedale and Southdale. The meetings begin at 7:00 PM. Check the newsletter for times and dates. Reports that are of concern to the Local are given at these meetings, such as the Treasurer's Report, minutes from the Executive Board meetings and Committee Reports. All members of the Local are allowed to attend these meetings. Other than the newsletter, it is your main place to express views about the union and learn about things going on in Hennepin County.
The newsletter, "A New Voice," is the main means of communication with the approximately 1,300 Hennepin clerical employees represented by AFSCME. If you have any comments or questions, or would like to submit an article, cartoon or something of interest to the newsletter, contact an editor. Submission must be made by the day of the membership meeting in order to be published in the next month's newsletter. The distribution of the newsletter is done by members at different work site locations. If you miss an issue or would like to help distribute the newsletter or other union publications in your workplace area please contact an editor.
