Wellstone MemorialsBy Lynn StetlerIn the aftermath of Paul and Sheila Wellstone's deaths last fall, the local wanted to make a monetary donation to a memorial. The decision was made at that time to wait until we found a foundation or group that we felt was appropriate. The Wellstones were strong supporters of unions across the country including AFSCME and our own Council 14 and we wanted to choose a group that reflected that. At our September Membership Meeting, those in attendance voted to send a $100 donation to Wellstone Action. Wellstone Action is a non-profit organization dedicated to continuing Paul and Sheila Wellstone's fight for progressive change and economic justice. As founding members of the group, our donation will honor the Wellstones and also train thousands of individuals across the country to become active in politics and organizing. Our gift will also activate Paul and Sheila's strong network of supporters to advocate for the issues that they were so passionate about. For more information about this group, check out the Website at www.wellstone.org. Those who attended the recent AFL-CIO convention saw a short preview of a new documentary film about the Wellstones titles "Carry it Forward". There wasn't a dry eye in the hall, and there were lots of lumps in throats. The full length documentary will be 60 - 90 minutes. In order to fund this, Hard Working Pictures Production is seeking tax deductible donations. The members attending the September Membership Meeting also voted to donate $100 for this project. Their Website is www.carryitforward.org. If your computer has the right set up you can see some of the video. |
